Hi all I've been cooking this one for a while now.
If you know me you also know I hate deceptive things, so naturally i hate 99% of marketing out there.
I also am a proud engineer and value quality engineering over everything, so, this trend of lying about car's engine capacity and other aspects has been slowly but steady boiling me in a stew... time to serve then :)
It started with Volvo:
When Engineers where running things at Volvo, a T4 engine meant a Turbo 4 cylinder engine, a T5 engine meant a Turbo 5 cylinder engine, a T6 engine meant a turbo 6 cylinder engine and a V8 meant a 8 cylinder engine in V shape. And guess what, a D5 would be a Diesel 5 cylinder engine, a 1.6D would be a 1.6 Diesel and a 2.0D would be a 2.0 diesel engine... Simple! Clear! but above all, HONEST!
Then for some reason I fail to understand, they decided to stop producing interesting cars, but did a last effort on maintaining some spirit with the dual charge 2.0 4 cylinder engine able to produce 400 bhp out of a simple 2.0 with turbo and supercharger combined. Bold, crazy... very Volvo... and then...
..and then... all the sudden, around 2016, some marketeer must have taken over and we started looking at: Hi all I've been cooking this one for a while now.
T2 - 2.0 4 cylinder, turbo engine
T3 - 2.0 4 cylinder, turbo engine
T4 - 2.0 4 cylinder, turbo engine
T5 - 2.0 4 cylinder, turbo engine
T6 - 2.0 4 cylinder, turbo + supercharger engine
T8 - 2.0 4 cylinder, turbo + supercharger engine
It culminated with Audi and their absurd any "your name here"tdi technology:
Again back in the day, 1.6tdi means 1.6liter engine, tdi tech. A 2.0 tdi meant a 2.0 liter engine with tdi technology, they even had the 1.9 130PD and 1.9 150PD standing for 1900cc, 130 or 150 bhp and Pumpe Duse (u-boat diesel injector technology where the injector is also the pump as it is manually operated by a cam shaft and produces injection pressure with mechanical direct drive). Now?:
35tdi - 2.0 4 cylinder common rail tdi engine
40tdi - 2.0 4 cylinder common rail tdi engine
But it does not end here. Remember the glorious Audi Quattro?
With that Rally winning pedigree QUATTRO system? You think your Audi TT, or the 1999 on A3 has the same tech? Think again. It uses Haldex technology! It does not mean it is bad... it's JUST NOT QUATTRO AND YOU BADGE THEM AS SUCH STILL!
But still,
...while all of these brands made their marketing efforts do defraud their customers, BMW on the other hand didn't...almost... almost didn't. And I can almost forgive them for that!
You see They lies still, they are just giving you more than you think you are paying for... on most cases, but not all.. seams like they feel bad when they lies so they make up on other models... either that or they suffer from bi-polar marketeer disorder.
BMW x16D - 2.0 4 cylinder Turbo
BMW x18D - 2.0 4 cylinder Turbo
BMW x20D - 2.0 4 cylinder Turbo
BMW 123D - 2.0 4 cylinder Turbo ( the ALMOST)
BMW 330D - 3.0 6 cylinder Turbo
BMW 335D- 3.0 6 cylinder Turbo ( the ALMOST)
Conclusion:
The world has gone crazy with marketing. It's like humans has stopped evolving and started a regressive process that makes them sheep , easily controlled with lies, delivered with a new sort of tool called marketing... and we can claim this without instant rebelion and blood on the streets. I can't understand!
